Het verhaal over Marjane die op 9-jarige leeftijd in Iran wordt geconfronteerd met de Islamitische Revolutie. De fundamentalisten dwingen de vrouwen tot het dragen van sluiers en zetten velen gevangen. Ondanks deze sociale terreur weet Marjane toch punk, Iron Maiden en Abba te ontdekken en later wordt ze door haar ouders naar Oostenrijk gestuurd om daar veilig naar school te gaan. Hoewel ze er na verloop van tijd geaccepteerd wordt, besluit ze toch terug te gaan naar het tyrannieke bewind van Iran, omdat het simpelweg als haar thuis voelt, en besluit daar haar mening te blijven ventileren over wat ze ziet.
