Baltimore, 1900. Een moeder en een dochter worden op brutale wijze om het leven gebracht en rechercheur Emmett Fields (Evans) wordt op de zaak gezet. Tijdens zijn onderzoek stuit hij op een schokkende ontdekking: de misdaad komt tot in de details overeen met een fictief misdaadverhaal geschreven door de onsuccesvolle auteur en dichter Edgar Allan Poe (Cusack). Terwijl Poe ondervraagd wordt door rechercheur Fields vindt er tegelijkertijd nog een grimmige moord plaats, wederom overeenkomend met één van Poe’s verhalen. Ze beseffen dat er een seriemoordenaar aan het werk is en besluiten hun krachten te bundelen om deze seriemoordenaar te vatten voordat er meer onschuldige slachtoffers vallen.
