In de zeventiger jaren trekt Robyn in het gezelschap van haar hond en vier kamelen solo door de Australische outback. Om de financiële middelen en de kamelen bij elkaar te krijgen, werkt ze eerst een tijd op een kamelenranch, waar ze leert hoe ze met de dieren moet omgaan. Als ze aan deze bijzondere reis begint, wordt ze bekend als de ‘camel lady' en al snel wordt ze 1 van de meest fascinerende reizigers van haar tijd. De zoektocht naar haarzelf wordt herhaaldelijk verstoord door toeristen en journalisten. Het enige contact dat ze toelaat is met fotograaf Rick Smolan, die vanuit New York invliegt om haar ongelofelijke reis vast te leggen op camera voor National Geographic. Er ontstaat een bijzondere band tussen hen.
