Een duistere snoodaard brengt verschillende maffiabazen om, waarvan Batman de schuld op zich krijgt. Zijn alter-ego Bruce Wayne komt zijn ex-verloofde Andrea Beaumont tegen. Door middel van flashbacks wordt de ontmoeting tussen beide, de parallellen in hun levens en bovenal de origine van Batman als die van de Phantasm onthult. Tevens blijken Batman en de Phantasm een gezamelijke vijand te hebben; de Joker.
